The short answer

What a home intercom system includes

It has a station outside and a screen inside. When someone rings, every screen in the house rings with them, and your phone too. You see the person, talk to them and unlock the entrance or gate without walking down. iGTD installs it as part of the residential security systems we wire across the five boroughs.

  • Video door station
  • Indoor screens on each floor
  • Answer from your phone
  • Unlock door or gate
  • Wired, no Wi-Fi drops
Included in every install
  1. 01A plan for the outdoor station and a screen on each floor you want
  2. 02A wired video station at the front door or gate
  3. 03Indoor screens with talk, see and unlock
  4. 04A tie-in to an electric strike or gate lock if you want remote unlock
  5. 05Phone app setup for everyone in the house
  6. 06The old intercom removed and the wall patched where we worked

Video door stations

The station has a camera, a speaker and a call button, mounted at the front door or the gate. It can sit flush in brick or on the surface of the frame. Multi-family homes get a button for each unit, so every family answers their own visitors.

  • Flush or surface mount
  • A button for each unit in multi-family homes

Indoor monitors on every floor

A screen on each floor means nobody runs down the stairs to see who rang. The monitors can also call each other, so the kitchen can reach the top floor. And the app rings your phone when you are away, so a delivery never gets turned away. For a house with one door, a video doorbell installation does the same job for less.

  • Talk, see and unlock from each screen
  • Room to room calling
  • Phone rings when you are out

Replacing an old home intercom

An old audio or buzzer intercom can usually move to video on the wires that are already in the walls. We test the old wiring first, reuse what is good and pull new cable only where we have to. The video stays wired, so it never drops off the Wi-Fi. Apartment buildings get the larger intercom installation with a button for every unit.

  • Old wiring tested and reused
  • New cable only where needed
  • No phone line needed

Home intercom questions

Still have a question? Call 929-299-8400.

What can I replace my old home intercom system with?

A wired video intercom. A camera station goes at the door, screens go inside, and you can answer from your phone. The old wiring can often be reused.

Does a home intercom need a phone line?

No. A wired video intercom runs on its own cable from the door station to the screens, and the app connects through your home internet.

Can I answer the intercom from my phone?

Yes. The app rings your phone when someone is at the door, so you can see them, talk and unlock from anywhere.

Can the indoor screens call each other?

Yes. Screens on different floors can call each other, so you can reach someone upstairs without shouting.

Do you install wireless intercoms?

No. iGTD installs wired intercoms only, so the video never drops off the Wi-Fi and there are no batteries to change.

How much does a home intercom system cost?

It depends on the number of door stations and screens, whether the old wiring can stay and whether you want remote unlock. iGTD gives you a free on-site estimate and a written price before any work starts.
